How long does PPF last?
A car-care guide
The films on our list carry listed warranties from 3 to 10 years; useful life also depends on the fitted film’s condition and care.
General guidance from 1.618 Dettagli Auto, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi.
The short answer
How long does PPF last?
The films on our list carry listed warranties from 3 years for Garware Protect to 10 years for XPEL Ultimate Plus, Stealth and Ultimate Plus Black. These periods are not full coverage terms or guaranteed replacement dates. Our paint protection film guide explains the physical layer over the paint.
Start with the exact product and its written warranty, then look at the film on the car. A warranty sets out cover for specified problems; useful life is about when that installation needs attention or replacement.
At our Lajpat Nagar studio, preparation and installation are included in the agreed PPF job. We agree the film, finish and panels before starting; GST is extra. The PPF service page covers those choices.
A useful lifespan conversation ends with a decision: continue normal care, arrange an assessment or plan replacement. The birthday of the installation is only one part of that decision. Keep the invoice and describe any change you have noticed, rather than choosing a replacement date from a general online chart.
The guide to PPF materials and finish types separates construction from appearance.

Manufacturer documents
What does a PPF warranty cover?
A PPF warranty covers the defects and remedies in the exact product terms. The film brand guide compares named variants; one warranty cannot be assigned to an entire brand.
LLumar lists a 10-year manufacturer limited warranty for Platinum Gloss, with restrictions. Check the document applicable to the proposed installation for its issuer, territory, covered defects and claim route. Read the remedy too: the period alone does not explain which costs are included. Keep manufacturer cover and installation support as separate entries in your records.
| Record | What it tells you | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Product warranty | Defined material cover and remedies | Applicable terms and registration |
| Installation support | Help with fitting concerns | Studio contact and agreed support terms |
| Film condition | Whether the fitted film needs attention | Assessment notes and photographs |
After handover
When can you wash new PPF?
First-wash timing follows the fitted film’s instructions. Garware publishes 72 hours after installation; 3M specifies one week for its Pro Series. These are product-specific maker instructions, not a universal waiting period.
Share the relevant care instructions with whoever washes the car. The chosen finish determines suitable cleaning products and methods; a different film’s waiting period is not a substitute.
For an unfamiliar appearance after fitting, send a clear photograph with the installation date and panel location. Let the installer identify the next step before you try a treatment. This gives the person assessing the film a record of how the concern first appeared.

Ongoing care
How should you care for PPF?
Care for PPF with the washing methods and products specified for its finish. Use the aftercare checklist to keep the practical details together. Gloss and matte choices should each have matching instructions, so the person washing the car knows which finish they are handling.
Keep this record with the vehicle if someone else takes over its care. A new wash provider needs the relevant instructions, not just the information that the car has film. If the car is sold, pass the invoice, product details and applicable documents to the next owner.
- Keep the exact product, invoice and installation date together.
- Follow the fitted film’s first-wash and regular-care instructions.
- Record cleaning products and methods suitable for the chosen finish.
- Photograph a concern before trying a repair.
- Contact the installer about lifting, an edge or an unfamiliar change.
Appearance changes
What should you do if PPF looks yellow?
A colour change needs an assessment of the fitted film and its history. Note the affected panels, when you first saw it and any recent cleaning or treatment. A wide photograph shows the location; a close photograph shows the detail. Keep both with the product records.
On a white car, view the finish sample before fitting and discuss how you want the covered panels to look. For a later concern, describe the difference you see in ordinary viewing conditions. Leave polishing or chemical treatment until the cause has been checked. Any warranty decision follows the applicable product terms.

Inspect concerns
Can self-healing fix marks and lifting edges?
Self-healing can fade fine surface marks with heat; lifting edges need a separate assessment. The feature works on light swirls and scratches in the top layer. It will not repair deep cuts, torn film, dents or damaged paint. An edge concern is a fitting question, not a self-healing demonstration.
Describe whether the mark sits on a flat panel, follows a contour or runs along an edge. Include any known contact or recent treatment. That detail helps separate a surface mark from a concern that needs closer inspection. Keep the original photographs so the installer can compare the appearance later.
After damage
What happens to PPF after an accident?
Accident-damaged film and the panel beneath it need separate repair decisions. First settle the vehicle repair with the repairer and insurer. Insurance payment for replacement film depends on the actual policy and approval. Keep the film invoice, panel list and photographs ready for that discussion.
A repaired panel can have a different paint and film history from the rest of the car. Paint readiness belongs with the repairer’s guidance; replacement-film suitability depends on that surface. Keep the new product and installation date with the panel’s repair record.

Renewal planning
When should old PPF be removed?
Old PPF should be assessed for removal when its condition or your replacement plan calls for it. Identify the fitted product and known paint repairs first. Film age, visible concerns and the surface underneath all belong in the discussion. Arrange a professional assessment rather than treating removal as routine washing.
Removal can affect repaired or poorly bonded paint. The risk depends on the surface and film history, including any unknown earlier work.
Removal, preparation and replacement are separate parts of a renewal proposal. The installed-price guide explains the cost factors. A changed film, finish or panel list describes a different replacement job.
Keep your records
What should your PPF handover record include?
Your handover record should identify the car, fitted film, finish, panels and applicable care and support terms. Add the invoice, installation date and registration confirmation where required. Keep a named contact for material concerns and another for fitting questions if the routes differ.
Use the PPF quote checklist before booking to collect these details while the work is being agreed. After collection, the same record becomes a reference for care, assessment and any replacement discussion. Save the agreed version rather than relying on a package name or an old message with a price.
For a later assessment, add a short timeline to the handover record. Include when the concern appeared, which panels are affected and what was done afterwards. Keep any assessment response and agreed work with the same file. If a panel is replaced, record the new installation date and product for that panel. This avoids treating an older bonnet and a newly fitted bumper as though they share one installation history, and gives the next assessment a more useful starting point.

A few answers
Questions before deciding
How can I judge the remaining life of my PPF?
Use the fitted product details and an assessment of its current condition. Photographs, the installation date and care history give that discussion a clear starting point.
Does a long warranty mean free replacement for any damage?
Cover follows the listed defects, exclusions and remedies. Read those terms alongside the separate installation-support agreement.
Where can I find first-wash timing?
Keep it on the handover sheet for the fitted product and share it with whoever washes the car.
What records help with a colour concern?
Keep panel photographs, the date you noticed the change, recent treatment details and the original product documents.
Can I replace film on selected panels?
Yes, replacement can be scoped to selected panels. Existing film removal, paint condition and preparation affect the replacement work; the new product and finish need their own record.
